의대 진학이 대학 진학과 다른 여러가지 사항들 중에는 대기자 명단에 올랐다가 합격하는 확률이 다른 점도 포함되어 있다. 대학 입시에서는 대기자 명단에 올랐다고 하면 일단 불합격일 것이라고 생각하며 아쉬워 하는 것이 일반적인 반응이며 사실에 가까운 일이다. 하지만 의대 입시에서는 대기자 명단에 올랐다는 의미는 아직 가능성이 있다고 받아 들여도 좋다고 감히 전한다. 물론 모든 대기자 학생이 합격을 한다는 말은 아니지만 대기자 명단에 올랐다가 추후에 합격통지를 받는 학생의 경우가 생소하지 않은 일이며 일부 의대의 경우 처음부터 합격한 학생의 수보다 대기자 명단에 올랐다가 추후에 합격통지를 받는 학생의 수가 더 많다는 말까지 나오고 있으니 참고할 사항이다.
실례로 이번 8월에 메이요 의대에 입학할 학생들 중에는 지난 5월 17일에 합격통지를 추가로 받은 학생들이 다수 있다. 참고로 대기자 명단에 오르지 않고 직접 합격한 학생들에 대한 합격자 발표는 3월초로 마감이 되었고, 이 합격생들은 4월 30일까지 본인이 진학할 단 한 곳의 의대를 결정해야만 했었다. 그러므로 4월 30일 이후에 공석이 생긴 의대에서는 5월 초부터 대기자 명단에 오른 학생들 중에 추가 합격자를 선발해 통지해 주는 것이다. 실제로 필자가 지도한 학생 중 한명이 메이요 의대로부터 5월 17일에 받은 추가합격통지문을 아래에 소개하니 참고하기 바란다.

2. A $100 deposit payable online to MCSOM is also required within 1 week of the initial offer. Detailed deposit payment instructions will be sent via email once the Office of Admissions receives your written acceptance form. The deposit is non-refundable. Holding acceptances at other schools after April 30 may result in forfeiture of your appointment to the entering class and any scholarship that you have been awarded. Your detailed financial aid packet will be available to you online via the Banner Student Portal once your acceptance has been fully processed, including the activation of your online student account and payment of the deposit as instructed below.
3. Your final appointment is contingent upon a satisfactory background check. Pre-matriculation background checks are conducted on all students holding appointments to the school as of May 1 of each class year. Additional information regarding this matter will be sent to you later.

위에서 보듯 5월 17일 오전 9시경 메이요 의대의 입학처장급의 교수 명의로 온 이메일 내용 중 가장 중요한 사항은 5월 24일까지 입학요망서(Accepted Student Confirmation Form)를 $100의 납입금과 함께 보내라는 사실이다. 통보한 날로부터 일주일 내에 우리 학교에 올 생각이 있으면 확인을 해 달라는 의미이며 이 일주일이란 시간이 지나고 입학요망서를 제출하지 않는다면 이 자리는 대기자 명단에 올라있는 다른 학생에게 주어지는 것이다. 이러한 과정은 입학정원이 다 채워질 때까지 지속될 것이므로 대기자 명단에 있는 학생들의 합격 가능성이 높다고 하는 것이다. 메이요 의대로부터 위의 합격통지를 받은 학생도 다른 명문 의대들에 합격했고 그 중 한 의대에 지난 4월 30일 이전에 진학할 의사를 밝혔으므로 메이요 의대가 추가합격을 통지해 줬을 때 그저 기분만 좋은 것이었지 메이요 의대에 진학할 의사는 없으므로 아마 5월 25일에 다른 대기자 학생이 추가로 합격통지를 받았을 것이다. 이런 절차는 하버드 의대에서도 매년 발생하고 사우스 캐롤리나 의대에서도 매년 발생하는 5월과 6월의 전형적인 모습이다. 만일 대기자 명단에 오른 자녀가 있다면 해당 학교에 불러만 주면 당장 달려가겠다는 의사를 표시하게 권한다. 5월의 의대는 정원을 채워야만 하는 당면과제를 안고 있으므로 기왕이면 불러 줬을 때 감사하다며 뛰어올 학생을 마다할 이유가 별로 없다. 인생살이에 타이밍이 끼치는 영향도 무시하지 못 한다는 부모의 지혜를 자녀와 공유하여 좀 더 행복한 한인사회가 되었으면 좋겠다.
